Compared to side-loading trucks, rear-loading compactor trucks are more complex and cost more.

Options include a bin lift for standard trash bins, a triangular bucket, a combination triangular bucket/bin lift, a large floor-mounted bin system, or a rocker mechanism. The relatively low position of the bin lift on rear-loading trucks ensures that the raised bin does not exceed the height of the vehicle—a key space advantage. When using large floor-mounted bins, it also seals the rear loading port during transport. The rocker mechanism is used with rocker-arm bins and can be combined with the bin lift.
