The Difference Between ISUZU Rear Load and Side Load Compactor Garbage Truck

Oct 24, 2025

ISUZU Compression garbage trucks are widely used for the collection and transportation of domestic waste. Their ability to compress waste allows for more efficient transportation, resulting in a significant market share. With the continued advancement of waste sorting, these trucks are able to efficiently collect, compress, and transport sorted waste from designated bins.

Although often referred to simply as compression garbage trucks, side-loading compression garbage trucks are a major variant of compression garbage trucks. Both side-loading and rear-loading garbage trucks work by collecting waste into bins for compression and transportation. As the name suggests, their main difference lies in the loading direction: side-loading or rear-loading.

Side-loading compression garbage trucks have a relatively simple structure, a lower failure rate, lower manufacturing costs, easier maintenance, and lower operating costs. Their compression capacity is comparable to that of rear-loading garbage trucks and, with design optimization, may even exceed it, contributing to their popularity.

However, side-loading garbage trucks can only lift standard garbage bins. Its elevator can handle trash of various sizes, such as GB 120 and 240L plastic containers, round iron containers, and 660L standard containers, but this is still its only loading method. Another disadvantage is that the lifting and dumping of the containers requires significant vertical space, which may restrict operation in indoor or underground facilities.

Side-loading dump trucks are based on self-loading dump trucks. Key improvements include a reinforced container structure, an improved rear door sealing and locking mechanism, built-in compression blades, and an integrated wastewater tank. These upgrades enable the container to withstand greater pressure. The compression blades compact the trash loaded by the elevator and can be configured for full or partial stroke. Unloading options include dumping or blade push, while the wastewater tank collects waste to prevent leaks. Optional electric controls simplify operation and reduce labor intensity. For more budget-conscious needs, a basic configuration without the built-in compression blades is also available.

In contrast, rear-loading compactor garbage trucks use a lifting mechanism to deliver trash into a rear hopper. The scraper and slider then work together to press the waste into the main bin, with bidirectional compression pushers ensuring efficient compression. The entire process is managed by a PLC programmable system, typically enabling one-touch automated cycles for easy operation. Compared to side-loading trucks, rear-loading compactor trucks are more complex and cost more.

Their primary advantage lies in their versatility, as the lifting mechanism can accommodate a variety of collection methods. Options include a bin lift for standard trash bins, a triangular bucket, a combination triangular bucket/bin lift, a large floor-mounted bin system, or a rocker mechanism. This flexibility allows for seamless integration with a variety of front-line collection tools, such as trash cans, waste bins, and manual tricycles, expanding their application range.

The relatively low position of the bin lift on rear-loading trucks ensures that the raised bin does not exceed the height of the vehicle—a key space advantage. When using large floor-mounted bins, it also seals the rear loading port during transport. The rocker mechanism is used with rocker-arm bins and can be combined with the bin lift.

In summary, the core functions of both side-loading and rear-loading compacting garbage trucks are garbage compression and transportation, but there are significant differences in loading methods, structural complexity, cost, operating space requirements, and versatility. Users should choose the most appropriate type based on their specific operating environment and needs.
